Large-scale planting and commercial tree planting
Bulk shrub and hedge planting, standard and semi-mature tree planting, tree pit construction and establishment on construction projects.
Wrights Landscapes Group has the labour, procurement and nursery supply network required to deliver large-scale commercial planting and tree-planting schemes to programme, including semi-mature stock and season-critical bare-root works.
Volume planting is a procurement problem as much as a labour one. Getting three thousand shrubs and two hundred trees of the right species, size and form onto a site in the right week, in condition, is where these packages succeed or fail. We hold relationships with nurseries in the UK and across Europe and place orders early enough to reserve stock rather than take whatever is left in the planting season.
Scope

Shrub and herbaceous planting
Bulk planting to landscape architects' schedules and setting-out drawings, including bed preparation, soil amelioration, planting to density, mulching and weed-control fabric where specified.

Standard and semi-mature trees
Planting from light standard through to semi-mature and extra-heavy standard stock, with lifting and handling planned for access, including root-balled, containerised and bare-root supply.

Tree pits and support systems
Tree pit excavation and construction to specification, including tree pit substrates, root barriers, aeration and irrigation systems, underground guying, above-ground staking and tying, and tree grilles or guards.

Hedgerow and native whip planting
Native hedgerow, whip and transplant planting for boundary, screening and habitat purposes, including guards, canes and mulching, delivered within the bare-root season.

Structure and buffer planting
Woodland edge, buffer, screening and structure planting to public open space and development margins, typically at higher densities and to ecological or planning-condition specifications.

Establishment and replacement
Watering regimes, formative pruning, stake and tie adjustment, failure inspection and replacement planting through the defects and maintenance period.
Specification and standards
We plant to BS 8545 (trees from nursery to independence in the landscape), BS 3936 (nursery stock), BS 4428 (general landscape operations) and BS 3882 (topsoil), and to project-specific NBS clauses where these are more onerous. Where a specification cannot be met with the stock available in a given season, we say so in writing before ordering and propose an equivalent for the landscape architect's approval rather than substituting quietly.
Season
Bare-root and root-balled planting is a winter operation, broadly November to March. Container-grown stock extends the window but at higher cost and with a heavier watering liability through establishment. Where a programme pushes planting outside its proper season we will price it, but we will also set out the failure risk and the additional watering requirement so that the liability is understood by everyone before the works start.
